About Harf

Harf (حرف) means “letter” in Arabic. It is a free website for learning Arabic, written for English and Urdu speakers who are starting from zero.

What you will find here

The full alphabet with the four shapes of every letter, beginner grammar lessons, everyday vocabulary, useful phrases and quick quizzes. Every Arabic word can be played aloud with your device’s built-in Arabic voice.

Which Arabic we teach

Modern Standard Arabic (الفصحى, fuṣḥā), the Arabic of books, news and formal speech, understood across the Arab world. Our grammar lessons follow the order of classic courses such as the Madinah books, but every explanation and example on Harf is our own.

How we write pronunciation

We spell Arabic sounds with English letters to help you read: aa, ii and uu are long vowels; ḥ, ṣ, ḍ, ṭ and ẓ are heavy sounds made deeper in the mouth; ʿ is the letter ع and ’ is a short catch in the throat, the hamza ء.

Free for everyone

Harf has no sign-up and no paid plan. If it helps you, you can support new lessons on our Ko-fi page.
